Common Fingerprinting Techniques

It was roughly one hundred years ago that fingerprinting was accepted as a reliable method for identifying individuals. Back then, the common practice was to use ink that was first applied to the hand or fingers of an individual to obtain a print.

This is in fact an excellent, straight forward method, so it stayed in use for decades in spite of its one shortfall. That shortfall was that it left the person who was fingerprinted with hands covered in black ink.

Since then however, new methods have been developed that make taking a persons fingerprint a far less intrusive process. This in turn has allowed entities other then police agencies to more easily incorporate fingerprinting into their personal identification processes.

One breakthrough was the development of new inks that could be easily rubbed off. These types of inks don’t require any special paper but none the less many people would still rather not use them.

What came next was invisible inks that react with a chemical that is coated on the paper. The person to be printed is presented with what looks like an empty ink case, which makes the process far more appealing to the individual who is loath to stick their finger into even rub-off ink.

However; this process requires a specially coated paper which precludes it from being used on untreated documents such as personal checks. However; obtaining any variety of treated documents is no problem now, as many companies now provide this service.

Digital scanning is one of the latest fingerprinting technologies to be developed. It allows a person to be fingerprinted without the use of any inks or chemicals. This is in fact the most common preferred method of most modern police agencies.
