What Is Your Child Going to be for Halloween?

What Is Your Child Going to be for Halloween?

Children’s Halloween Costumes are always a big deal for children and picking the right one is critical. Everyone wants to know what their classmates and neighborhood friends are going to be on that fun and sugar filled night. The spooky and fantasy filled tradition remains strong in neighborhoods across America and families stock up on treats to be handed out until the last goblin or princess is ready to head home.

The origin of the Halloween holiday, far from the holiday we know today, dates back thousands of years when the Celts celebrated their festival called Samhain. This celebration ended the season of the harvest and fell on the eve of their New Year which started on November 1. On the night of Halloween the Celts believed the dead came back to earth and wreaked havoc and tainted the food supplies in the villages. In colonial times the townsfolk celebrated by telling scary stories pulling pranks on the unsuspecting. The practice of disguising themselves in the first Halloween costumes was a way to ensure that the returning dead did not recognize them thus saving their food supply for the winter.

Children’s Halloween costumes today are as elaborate and varied as anyone can imagine. The talented seamstress mom can whip up just about any costume character her child may want to be. Not all parents can provide the creativity or the time to outfit the little ones in this manner. Retail stores and costume shops stock their racks to overflowing in anticipation of the eager little ones who want to be a princess or a super hero for just one night. Prices can range from very reasonable to very pricy depending on how elaborate or high tech one might want to get.

Halloween costumes for children are just not complete without something to carry all that candy in. The “treater” passing out candy at the door will see everything from seemingly bottomless pillows cases to flashing jack-o-lanterns. Each year retailers come up with more clever and efficient ways for the young folks to collect their booty. It is in the process of filling these containers for a couple of hours on October 31, that one can be thankful they are not having to settle down and put to sleep all these “sugared up” little ones!
