Finally both of your hands must rank higher than both of your opponents hands (both five and two card hands). Further the two card hand can only have two combinations; one pair and high card.

After the cards are arranged in to two hands, they are placed on the table face down. Once you put them down, you can no longer touch them. The dealer will turn over his cards and make his hands. Each players hand is compared to the dealer’s hands. If the player wins one hand and loses the other, this is known as “push” and no money is exchanged. If dealer wins both hands then he/she wins the players stake and vice versa. Now what if there is a tie, the only advantage with the dealer here is he/she wins all ties.

After the hand is played, the next person clock-wise becomes the dealer and the next hand is played. Introduction

Online games from chess and backgammon to 1st person shooters are rife with people who use computer assisted play or computer robots – even when there is no money at stake. With the appropriate program any player is able to play at a world championship level ruining the game for honest players. What makes online poker different, given that there are huge amounts of money at stake? In this article I will explain how I developed a poker bot and what I learnt from this experience. My conclusion is that although it is possible to construct a poker playing bot the threat from poker bots to the online poker player is extremely small to non-existent.

“Games” Theory

For interest and college courses I had previously written computer playing programs or bots for games including chess, Connect 4, Othello, backgammon, bridge and various others. For games such as Connect 4, Othello, chess and backgammon where all players have the same available information about the game state, the theory on how to construct expert bots is well known. Deep search techniques, looking many moves ahead, are used for games such as Othello and chess.

Recently (10 years ago) it was discovered neural networks could be taught to play backgammon better than almost any human player. Games such as poker and bridge contain hidden information where the players can see their own hand but not that of the other players. The published theory behind writing expert computer bots for these incomplete information games is decades behind the complete information games and there are doubts techniques will be developed so that computers can play at expert or world championship level. At present the best techniques for these incomplete information games seem to involve some form of simulation and opponent modelling.

Anatomy of An Online Poker Bot

There are 3 basics parts to a poker bot. 1) Data Gathering – observing the game state and history 2) Data Processing – using the information from the data gathered to determine whether to fold, call or raise. 3) Output – Pressing the appropriate button on the poker room client.

My Poker Bot

My program was written in early 2004 with Microsoft .Net C++ and was developed to play at one online room only. For the technically minded the program relied heavily on MFC and the Win32 API. 1) Data Gathering My bot gathered information about game state and history from online poker tables by taking repeated screenshots and analysing the image.

To begin with I just observed games, taking screenshots automatically so I could gather data on the position of the cards, chips and button. By determining the color of a certain few pixels I was able to gather all this information about the state of the game. Eventually I was able to gather data from multiple poker tables (4 at a time) by repeatedly bringing each window to the foreground and taking a screenshot. From this screenshot I was able to determine my cards, board cards, button position, who was left in the hand, pot size and player bet sizes. 2) Data processing This is the component that eventually bought my poker bot project to an end, unable to develop a strong enough strategy to win consistently.

I tried various rules based, neural net and simulation techniques. At best my bot was able to make a very small profit at $1/2 and $2/$4 limit hold’em, but nowhere near the thousands of dollars a week I envisioned earning when I started the project. In the end it just wasn’t worth my time to continue to put resources into developing my poker bot further. 3) Output This was the easiest component to write. This involved programmatically moving the mouse pointer to the appropriate screen co-ordinates and then sending a mouse down/mouse up command signalling a left-click. I did give consideration to adding the ability for the bot to use chat but never progressed that far.

Conclusion

Although you might run into a poker playing bot whilst playing online the odds are it plays very poorly. At any level of play you are much more likely to run into an expert human player than an expert computer player.

Althought iam not a betting guru (i dont think there is one anyway) i want to share with you my betting filosophy that has given me a lot of winnings considering the money i had invested.First of all i started betting in order to have a steady income month in month out.To do that i was going to make sure that i win at least 8 out of 10 times i played.So my first rule was to bet only on the favorites and to be more specific on the hot favorites.

So major tournaments are always a good betting chance.Some of you will say that to get to know those things in tennis for example requires a lot of research and time.i wont argue with you but think of the benefits as well.You dont even have to be a tennis fan to know that right now tennis for example is dominated by the amazing Roger Federer who destroys competition 99% of the time.So when placing your bets Roger is a nice guy to have around. My next rule is the 1.20 rule:Τhat means that a single event that has bigger odds than 1.20 is not even an option for me. I usually prefer 1.10 odds or lower.Very low i hear you say but accumulating the right events gives you a good odd.

As far as soccer is concerned i always play double chances for the games i choose.The first chance is always the draw and the other for the favorite.For example if Chelsea plays Aston Villa at home 1x is my pick. if Chelsea plays Liverpool this game is not for me. Now let just say that you have some basic Knowledge in sports and you want to start wagering how much are you willing to deposit? As a rule of thumb no less than 50 euros and no more than 100.Bet only the extra money you have or dont bet at all.When i started i deposited 80 euros and i set a goal to double the amount in a month.

I actually doubled it twice and when it was time for my first withdrawal i withdrew those 80 euros i deposited and i said to myself that from this moment on whatever you win or lose is not you money.I think that is a great feeling to have.But as my goal was to reach a steady income i made a promise not to withdraw for the next 3 months.

I was betting steadily halph of my earnings and my betting was consistent almost a wager every day.after three months i had reached 2000 euros.So the stakes in bets often went as high as 400 or 500 for the possibility to win for example 50.You may say that is stupid but if you win almost all the time(two or three losses) is money in the bank.By the end of the fourth month i withdrew 1300 euros and still had the 2000.Thats my method: Το reach a respectable amount of money that are all winnings and to bet with small odds relative big amounts of cash that 90 percent of the time wont lose.And if you lose some of them in the process remember:it was never yours.your 80 are in your pocket along with an additional amount of cash. Welcome to the first in a series of articles that will examine some of the finer points in sports betting for newcomers to the idea of trying to get the edge on the bookie. Many of the ideas will be applicable to other sports, but we’ll be focusing on football. Much of this stuff will be old-hat to old-timers but I hope many people will get at least a few ideas from the articles.

This Week: Q & A ABOUT “THE LINE”

1. “What the Line means – and what it doesn’t.”

Suppose you have a local bookie who lets you bet the line printed in your local newspaper’s sports section. On the Wednesday before the NFL season kicks off you open the paper and under “NFL Lines” you see:

(Favorites listed first, home team in CAPS)

JETS 6.5 Patriots

OK so what does this mean? This means you can call your bookie and bet $11 on the Jets. If the Jets win by 7 points or more you get the $11 back plus $10 more. If the Jets win by 6 or less, or the Patriots win, you lose the $11. Or, if you like the Patriots, you can bet $11 on them. If they win, or lose by six or less, you cash in, getting your $11 back plus $10 more. If the Jets win by 7 or more, your money on the Patriots is gone. Of course you can bet more than $11 to win $10. You can bet $55 to win $50, $110 to win $100, or more. Generally you risk $11 for every $10 you want to profit…that’s the standard and it varies little.

A line is also called a “point spread” or “spread”.

So what does it REALLY mean? The number 6.5 is the head start in points the line-maker gives the Patriots. He thinks, and your bookie is very much hoping, that if that’s the head start given the Patriots for wagering purposes, half of the bookie’s clients’ dough will be bet on the Jets and the other half on the Patriots.

Why is this important? The smart bookie doesn’t want to gamble-he wants a sure thing: a guaranteed profit from his customers. Consider the simplest case where a bookie has just two bettors, you and me, and this number of 6.5 does its job. You bet $11 on the Jets and I bet $11 on the Patriots. One of us wins. Let’s say it’s me…I hate the Jets. I get my $11 back, plus $10 of your money. The extra $1 you put in stays in the bookmaker’s pocket as his small, guaranteed profit (it’s called “vig” or “juice”).

What does the Line NOT mean? It does not mean, under any circumstances, that oddsmakers think the Jets will win by about 6 or 7 points. It’s your job to predict who will win and by how much…the line-maker doesn’t want to do your job for you. He works for the bookies. He and the bookies don’t care who wins or loses or by how much-they just want the same amount of cash on each side so the bookies can get juice. The line-maker tries to come up with the handicap of points that will put half the public’s money on the Jets, and half on the Patriots. As long as the money is split evenly, the bookie “wins” in his own way, and the result of the game is of no importance to him.

2. “Whoa. The Line is different today from yesterday. What’s with that?”

So the next day in the paper, it’s now

Jets 7 Patriots

instead. Now if you like the Jets they’ve got to win by 8 or more for you to cash in. If you like the Patriots, they can win or lose by 6 or less and you’ll win. (If the game lands on a Jet win by exactly 7, anybody who bet while the line was 7 just has their money refunded…you get the line at the time you bet, even if it changes later.)

The Line moved because the line-maker consulted with some big sports books and the money wasn’t balanced when the number was 6.5-there was more coming in on the Jets than the Patriots. So the line-maker and bookies changed the number to try to encourage more bets on the Patriots to even things up and get that juice.

(Line movement is complicated and these are only the basics. Detailing line movements and other things a bookie can do to “even up” the betting would take pages. One thing that the bookie could do instead of moving the line is to say “It’s still 6.5 but Jets bettors have to lay $11.50 to win $10 and Patriots backers can lay only $10.50 to win $10.” This is called “moving the money instead of the line”. Think about this one. It’s especially common when the line is exactly 3 points, a football winning margin that actually occurs a lot.)

3. “Why do different places have different Lines on the same game?”

Suppose you have access to several bookies (this is a good idea and we’ll talk about it in a later article) and you find they have different lines, like:

Bookie A: Jets by 6.5 (from the Newspaper)

Bookie B: Jets by 6

Bookie C: Jets by 7

Canbet: Jets by 6.5

Victor Chandler: Jets by 7

Bowmans: Jets by 6.5

Everybody but the bookie who blindly follows the paper is trying to balance the Jets bets with the Patriots bets. Maybe Bookie B is in Boston so he is a little lopsided on people betting for the Patriots — so he’s trying to entice Jets bettors to step up. Maybe Bookie C is in the Bronx (so he has too much money on the Jets at 6.5), and maybe Victor Chandler’s clients bet favorite teams a lot instead of underdog teams, so they’re looking for more money on the Patriots right now.

In the above example if you like the Jets you’ll take your business to Bookie B because if the Jets win by exactly 7 you’re a winner, and if the Jets win by exactly 6, it’s the only shop at which you don’t lose. If you like the Patriots, in this example Bookie C or Victor Chandler are the places to play because the Patriots get more points as a head-start there. More on line-shopping in a few weeks.

Rational Disciplined Play Will Yield Profits Longer Term

A winning blackjack player using basic strategy and card counting can gain an edge over the casino and emerge a winner over time.

While this is an accepted fact and many players know this, they deviate from what is rational and make irrational plays.

Why would they do this? The answer lies in human nature and the psychology that comes into play when money is on the line.

Lets look at some examples of blackjack psychology in action and two common mistakes players make:

The Fear of Going Bust

The fear of busting (going over 21) is a common error among blackjack players.

Going bust means you are out of the game.

Many players find it hard to draw an additional card even though it is the right play to make.

Standing on 16 when you should take a hit stops a player going bust. However, thinking logically the dealer has to stand on 17 and above, so the perceived advantage of not going bust is offset by the fact that you cannot win unless the dealer goes bust.

Losing by busting is psychologically worse for many players than losing to the dealer.

If you hit and bust it’s your fault. If you stand and lose, you can say the dealer was lucky and you have no responsibility for the loss.

Players get so preoccupied in trying to avoid going bust, that they fail to focus on the probabilities of winning and losing, when neither player nor the dealer goes bust.

The Gamblers Fallacy and Luck

Many players increase their bet after a loss and decrease it after a win. Called “the gambler’s fallacy,” the idea is that if you lose a hand, the odds go up that you will win the next hand, and vice versa.

This of course is irrational, but players fear losing and go to protect the winnings they have.

Other players do the reverse, increasing the bet size after a win and decreasing it after a loss. The logic here is that luck comes in streaks; so if you’re hot, increase your bets!

Why Do Players Act Irrationally When They Should Act Rationally?

There are players who don’t know basic strategy and fall into the above psychological traps. Experienced players do so as well. The reasons for this are normally associated with the following:

1. Players cannot detach themselves from the fact that winning blackjack requires losing periods, they get frustrated and try to get their losses back.

2. They fall into the trap that we all do, in that once “wont make a difference” and try another way of playing.

3. A player may have other things on his mind and is not focusing on the game and these blur his judgement and make him mentally lazy.

If You Have a Plan, You need to follow it!

This can be psychologically difficult for many players because it requires mental discipline to focus over the long term, take losses on the chin and remain mentally focused.

Winning at blackjack requires the discipline to execute a plan; if you don’t have discipline, you don’t have a plan!

When we last left off, I had just started talking about the Banker in Pai Gow, which you can opt to play if you desire. Today, I’ll go more in detail about this fascinating part of the game.

All players in Pai Gow are betting against the bank. This isn’t to be confused with the dealer, because in Pai Gow, the bank could be a player. When it’s a player’s turn to be the bank, that player can accept or decline. Should the player decline, the house will always accept in place of the player.

To beat the Banker, both of your hands must beat the Banker’s hands. Any “copies,” which is a fancy name for hand ties, goes to the Banker. Some players work to just win one of the two hands, because that’s a push and no money exchanges hands.

An example of a “copy” would be your 2nd highest hand and the bank’s 2nd highest hand consisting of a Jack-Queen. The bank wins all copies.

If you play multiple tables, keep your attention where the money is or get out of the cheap game. If you are playing at tables of equal stakes, be sure to also divide your attention equally.

Finally, don’t overlook the technical aspects of multi-tabling. You want to arrange the tables on the screen so that the action buttons from different tables don’t overlap.
