Top Five Castles in Scotland

There are hundreds of Castle located throughout Scotland but if you want to know which ones are the best to visit then read this article.  It has the top five which include the historic Stirling and Scenic Urquhart Castles.

Eilean Donan

Perhaps the most recognisable castle in Scotland, Eilean Donan is a popular filming location having appeared in “Loch Ness”, “Highlander” and more recently “Elizabeth the golden age”.

It is often referred to as Scotland’s most picturesque castle and its hard to disagree with that title.  Situated on at the Kyle of Lochalsh on the road to Skye, Eilean Donan sits isolated on its own island with the Isle of Skye in the background.

It was partially destroyed around 1719 at the time of the Jacobite Rising but has since then been bought by Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap in 1911 and restored to its former magnificence.  You can now tour the castle and even rent it out for your own wedding!

Edinburgh Castle

A landmark in Edinburgh, the castle overlooks Scotland’s capitol city as it sits on its elevated site.  This castle has seen its fair share of wars over there years with most of it being destroyed in a siege during 1571 and the reign of Mary Queen of Scots.

It is still worth a visit and now there is even an alfresco dining café available on the courtyard, offering a spectacular view of Edinburgh to enjoy with your Early Grey!  The Military Tattoo is held here in the summer months as temporary stands are erected and the courtyard plays out this spectacular show.

Stirling Castle

Stirling is one of the most historic cities in Scotland and the castle overlooking the city epitomises that history.  The castle dates from the 12th centaury and it has been laid siege to no less than sixteen times.

It is associated with many of Scotland’s most famous historic figures such as William Wallace, Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots.  It was one of the last Scottish strongholds held by the English before Robert the bruce gained independence for Scotland in 1314.

The castle was used in its latter years as an army base and it was used as this up until 1964.  It is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Stirling and you can have an excellent tour round the property while learning about its rich history.

Urquhart Castle

Urquhart castle rivals Eilean Donan for scenic beauty as it sits overlooking the mysterious Loch Ness in the Highlands.  It is mostly in ruins now after being destroyed by Bonnie Prince Charlie during the Jacobite rebellion in 1745.

It is still worth a visit as after a short presentation you get out and can explore the ruins of the castle and also enjoy the magnificent view out to Loch Ness.  Remember to bring a camera as there are plenty of excellent photo opportunities.
